First Baptist's Jeffress defends Trump's abortion comment, embattled Dallas police chief

In the last 24 hours, First Baptist Dallas’ Robert Jeffress picked a fight with an imam on Fox News, championed Dallas Police Chief David Brown and defended Donald Trump’s comments that there should be “some form of punishment” for women who get abortions should they one day be outlawed. Busy guy. Let’s start in reverse order.

When Trump offered those abortion comments during an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Wednesday, he couldn’t find anyone who agreed with him — not Ted Cruz, not John Kasich, not even Trump, who course-corrected later in the day to say that, well, “the woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb.” His 180-degree turn came after March for Life Education and Defense Fund president Jeanne Mancini said in a statement that “Mr. Trump’s comment today is completely out of touch with the pro-life movement and even more with women who have chosen such a sad thing as abortion.”

But Thursday morning, Jeffress took to Twitter to defend the GOP presidential candidate he has wink-wink-nudge-nudge endorsed as evangelicals’ top prospect in this year’s draft.

“Conservatives’ outrage over @realDonaldTrump abortion comments hypocritical,” Jeffress said. “Maybe they don’t really believe abortion is murder.”
